Before You Buy a Case Excavator: A Procurement Manager’s 5-Step TCO Checklist

  • Insurance premium differences: Some machines have higher theft risk or repair costs, which raises your insurance. Get a quote from your broker before signing.
  • Hidden fees: Documentation fees, early payoff penalties, or 'admin charges.' I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included' before I ask the price.

One more thing: Be cautious with online-only financing. I nearly signed a deal where the 'monthly payment' was $400 lower than the dealer's quote—but only because the loan term was stretched to 7 years (costing $6,000 more over the life of the loan). That's not a deal; it's a trap.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

After six years of tracking every invoice and managing about $180,000 in cumulative spending on excavators and loaders, here are the pitfalls I see most often:
