CASE Excavator or Something Smaller? A Cost Controller's Guide to Digging, Compacting, and Working With a Crane

The CX-series machines have good visibility, predictable controls, and parts availability is rarely a disaster—provided you live near a dealer that actually stocks parts.

But buy it like a cost controller, not a fan.

  1. Compare total cost of ownership, not the monthly payment.
  2. Include resale value. CASE machines hold value decently if you keep service records.
  3. Check the dealer's parts stock. A machine is worthless if you wait three weeks for a hydraulic pump.

Here's an example from my spreadsheet: we paid $682,000 for a CASE CX490D in 2023, including attachments and delivery. A competing quote came in $44,000 less. But that dealer had a six-week lead time on critical parts, while our local CASE dealer had a service van and a parts counter that actually answered the phone. Over a four-year ownership period, the $44,000 difference evaporates on the first major breakdown.

A walk-behind plate compactor rents for $80 to $150 per day in our region as of Q1 2025. A good 18-inch reversible plate compactor costs between $1,800 and $4,000 to buy. The load control, boom geometry, and braking systems on a crane are designed for vertical lifting. An excavator is designed to dig. Use the right tool.

An excavator can lift a load. That's not the same as being a crane.

How to work with a crane isn't just an operator skill. It's a planning discipline. Start with the load chart. A crane's capacity at max reach is often a fraction of its rated capacity close to the mast. Check the chart for the actual radius and configuration before you rig anything.

Then check the ground. A crane on soft soil is a crane waiting to tip. Use crane mats or pad the outriggers.

And read OSHA's crane standard (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC). If you're doing commercial construction lifting, a qualified rigger needs to handle the rigging. That's not bureaucracy; it's math and friction.

For communication, use hand signals or radios. And no one walks under a suspended load. No one. A 'quick grab' isn't worth a funeral.

Also relevant: don't skip sun protection on a lifting site. A cheap mesh-back bucket hat with a neck flap is the most underrated piece of PPE we buy. Cost: about $15. Value: keeps the person running the tag line conscious through the afternoon.

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In

Look at your last twelve months of job types, not what you wish you were doing.

  • If more than 60% of billable hours involve dirt movement, invest in the excavator conversation.
  • If callbacks are about settlement, cracks, and loose pavers, start with compaction.
  • If contracts require lifting heavy materials to upper levels, get crane quotes and rigging training.

Use a total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) worksheet. Include purchase price, financing, insurance, storage, maintenance, downtime, and expected resale. Compare that against a twelve-month rental with a service contract. I've done this for 34 equipment decisions in the last six years. It's boring. It works.

I built a cost calculator after getting burned on hidden fees twice. In Q2 2024, I compared four-month excavator rental quotes. A national chain quoted $9,500. A local dealer quoted $8,100. I almost went local until I read the fine print: $400 delivery, $275 pickup, $1,100 damage waiver, and a $35 per day environmental fee that wasn't on the first page. Total: $10,500. The national chain's $9,500 included all of it. That's a ten percent swing hidden in line items.

If your core work is excavation and a CASE dealer is close enough to respond, a CASE excavator is a defensible purchase. If your problem is bad compaction, start with a plate compactor. If you're lifting loads, learn how to work with a crane before you improvise with an excavator.

I'd rather spend fifteen minutes explaining this than watch someone rent the wrong machine for a year. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions.
