Search the word "case" online and you'll get legal cases, phone cases, the San Francisco EPA sewage case, and about a million bucket hats. But if you're sitting in a stalled excavator waiting on a CASE hydraulic filter, none of that matters. What matters is what a "cheap" replacement really costs—and that's not the number on the invoice.
I'm a procurement manager for a mid-sized construction company. So why do people keep believing the cheap part story?
The Causation Problem
Here's what I've learned: People think expensive parts are expensive because of the brand name. Actually, the brand name is a signal of consistency. The causation runs the other way—vendors who build dependable parts charge more because quality costs money, not because they want to gouge you.
There's also a legacy belief that aftermarket parts are "just as good." This was true twenty years ago, when construction machines were largely mechanical. A generic filter was a generic filter. Today's CASE machines have electronic emissions controls, tighter clearances, and sensors that respond to pressure differences across the filter. A filter that works fine in an old machine can cause a warning code or even a hard shutdown in a new one.
The Cost Nobody Quotes
You don't need a master's degree in accounting to see the difference. You just need the quote that shows everything.
When I compare vendors now, I ask one question before price: "What's NOT included?" Some vendors say, "Shipping, handling, and core return." Others say, "That's the total." The second group usually wins the contract—even when their base quote looks higher.

- Check the expected service life against your operating hours.
- If it goes inside the hydraulic or engine system, buy from a dealer or a proven OEM part supplier.
Transparency is not just a virtue. Under FTC advertising guidelines, a vendor has to substantiate product claims and not mislead you with hidden fees. If a quoted price mysteriously grows at checkout, that's a red flag. You don't need to file a complaint, but you should walk away.
The Bottom Line
The most expensive part is the one you buy twice. The cheapest part is the one that performs its job for as long as you expect it to.
Next time you see a $46 filter, a $30 drill bit, or a $99 bucket hat, ask yourself what the true cost is. Not the invoice total. The lifetime cost. That's the difference between a case-by-case decision and a costly case.
